A Day With Superman (Boy)

Every day with Indigo Brave (Indie) is an adventure. My sweet little man~ we call him Sonshine~is a miracle. Some day soon I'll tell you all about that, but for now, I just want you to experience a day with him. This is my day with Superman (Boy) on January 9, 2009. Buckle up!

Imagine all of this with a heavy lisp, the "ah" sound for "R's", and you've got him.

Indigo begins the day yelling at the top of his lungs, "MOOOMMMM, I had a good NAAAAPPPPP!!!!!!"...until I finally go get him. (He does this every day)

When I get him out of bed, he wraps his arms around my neck and his legs around my waist and says, "Oh, Mama...my sweet, sweet Mama."
After kissing and loving on him, I tell him it's too early.
And he says, "I'll just cuddle with you and Daddy for a little."

"Can I have a snack?"
"No, not yet."

When Greyley gets up, she wants to make breakfast. Indigo has been anxiously waiting for her to wake up. Last night they planned to make breakfast together. Right now Indigo is into cooking and helping. (May it ever be so!) He is in charge of the toast.

At the table:
Indigo: "I had a good dream." He smiles at me and Nate.
Mama: "You did? What was it?"
Indigo: "I dreamed Mama and Daddy were cuddlin' and lovin' each other."
He pats my arm with his hand and smiles his dreamy smile.
Daddy: "Oh my, let me go get my computer. I have to write that down."

He plays indoor basketball with Daddy until Daddy has to go to work. There are many tears when Nate leaves~ Indie wanted "ONE more Daddy hug!!!" So we call Nate on his way to work and it helps. The promise of playing trains in a little bit also helps.

"Can I have a snack?"
"No, we just ate breakfast."
"Please, can I have a snack?"
"OK, go get an apple."

I get dressed for the day. Indie comes along and takes a little nibble out of my bum. "MMM, you're good! Tastes like chicken!" he says.

I fold laundry and he comes running over. "Can I fold laundry?" He folds the washcloths and is actually pretty good at it. We put another load of laundry in the wash~ this boy LOVES doing laundry~ and put clothes away.

"Can I have a snack?"
"You just had one."
"Please, can I have another?"

"What are you eating, Mama?"
"A coughdrop," I say.
"I really like coughdrops, can I have one?"
"No, you don't need a coughdrop."
"My tongue is REALLY hurting. Can I have one?"

Playing trains, I am sitting by Indigo and he is standing as close as he can. He starts singing, "To the season, folly jolly, falalalala lalalala!" over and over again. He develops a mad case of hiccups while he is singing and in mid-hiccup, he leans over and gives me a big kiss on the lips...and then carries on singing...

I go to make some hot tea. "Can I come? Can I have some?" Indie follows me into the kitchen and we try to decide which tea to have. I tell him he can't have caffeine, so he struggles to make a choice. He picks up the strong ginger one and I tell him that one might not be too tasty for kids. He shrugs and says, "Oh, that's for girls..."

"Can we play?"
"You can go play."
"But what are you gonna play?"
"Well, I'm gonna play the Pick Up, CLEAN Up game."
"How do you play that?"
"You know, you pick things up off the floor and around the house and you clean...lots of things..."
He wrinkles his nose. "How long do you have to play that?"
"Until it's done."
"Well, when are you gonna be done with that stinky game?"
"I'm thinking NEVER, at this rate."
"NEVER?"
"Never."
"You need funner games, Mama."
"You're right, I do."

We start a card game. He straightens the draw pile. "It bothers me when the drawing cards are crinkled up," he says.
(It bothers me when they're not straight too, so I can totally relate)
"I'm gonna win you, Mama! I'm gonna WIN you." He gives me a wicked grin.
He does win a game. We are very proud and exchange high fives.

As we prepare lunch, I am Chef "Sabeen" and Indigo is my Sous Chef. I cannot call him "Indigo". I must only call him "Sous Chef". This is something he loves to play with Nate too and they speak in great French accents. I'm struggling with my accent, so we just get done quickly and begin to eat.

While eating, we discuss chips and movies.
Indigo: "How would you feel if someone took YOUR chips? How would you feel about that?!"
Mama: "I'd think...um...did you need some chips for your very own? How would you feel?"
Indigo: "Give that back. Get your own chips."
Mama: "Mmhmm..."
Indigo: "Look, my chip looks like a tree!"
Brief chewing...
Indigo: "In The Incredibles, I like the part..." (blah, blah, blah...I'm afraid I might have tuned out here, I've had this discussion one too many times)
Indigo: "...boy movies...Aren't you glad you have girl movies?"
Mama: (Snapping back to attention) "Have you ever seen Mama watch one of HER movies?"
Indigo: Shakes his head "NO". "I think we better not watch a movie today."
Mama: "I'd kinda like to see one of MY movies."
Indigo: "No, no movies today...no movies."

We have a bedtime ritual. It doesn't matter if it's just a nap or if it's going to bed for the night. He says this every time, with little variation.

"Naptime," I say.
We read a book and I tuck him into his bed, covering him with his three favorite blankets.
"I love you, Mama."
"I love you, Indigo."
"What do you want to eat in the morning?"
"Oh, some good dinner, maybe some chicken..." I say.
"What time should I wake up in the morning?"
"How about 5:30?" I answer.
"How much time is that?" He asks.
"About 3 hours."
"How much time is that?"
"Until about 5:30."
That satisfies him.
"Can you leave my door open a little?"

Around 5:53 PM (He slept in!), I hear, "MOOOMMMM, I had a good NAAAAPPPPP!!!!!!"

And thus, we move on into A Night With Superman (Boy), which will have to be another story for another time.

I don't want to get ahead of your upcoming blog, but I never fail to wonder in reverant awe at the miraculous contrast of one image or scene in my mind, and the rest of the story, the picture of your miracle Superman boy. While the three of you stayed the storm with strong, humble, quiet, hope and trust, your Superman lay in the palms of LOVE, which is clearly evident in your description of this day with your superhero. Gracias a Dios!

Thanks so much for your comments today. It's fun to share who Indigo is so you can get to know him, even my far off friends...
Sometimes the things he says, I think...No one would ever believe me. :)
And you're so right, Deb. I will never forget. God is so good.

I am so very glad that he is my cousin. That kid sounds a lot like the stories I have heard of Papa and Jared
